What is Orthodontics?
The type of treatment depends on the age of the patient and the severity of the problem. We recommend that patients are referred for their first appointment by the age of 8 years. A relatively short treatment may be required at this age if there is a problem with the bite or position of developing teeth. All patients are then seen for regular review appointments to monitor their development.
The majority of treatments are carried out when all of the first teeth have been lost; usually between 12 and 15 years of age. The diagnosis and treatment plan will be explained in detail and examples of all necessary braces will be available for demonstration. Extractions are only prescribed in very crowded cases and these are carried out by the family dentist.
Orthodontic treatment can be carried out at any age and an increasing number of adults are having treatment they wish they had in their teens. Many adults that had earlier treatment are having re-treatment as part of an "image makeover". A wide range of braces are now available that are either invisible or less noticeable.

How much will it cost?
Our Practice has a contract with West Essex Primary Care Trust and where possible we offer a full range of NHS orthodontic treatment for patients up to age 18. However, clear fixed appliances are only available privately. The cost of private treatment can be explained on the first appointment according to the type of treatment.
Private treatment
Clear appliances. Clear brackets can be used to make the appliance less noticeable.
Lingual appliances. In some cases the fixed appliance can be cemented on the inside and are therefore completely invisible.
Invisalign. In certain mild cases the teeth can be aligned with a series of transparent removable retainers.
Some frequently asked questions
Will I need to see my regular dentist?
Yes. Continue your regular check-ups.
Can adults have orthodontic treatment?
Treatment can be carried out at any age to improve the appearance and function of teeth.
How often will I need an appointment?
After the brace has been fitted, about every 4 - 8 weeks.
Will I need retainers?
At the end of treatment you will be provided with retainers to prevent your teeth from moving. It will be your responsibility to ensure that these are worn as prescribed for an indefinite period.
Why are NHS appointments in school time?
With most patients being in their teenage years, it is inevitable that most appointments will be required during school time. Support from teachers is very valuable and allows children to undertake complex treatment required to obtain a healthy smile which will last a lifetime.
How long will it take?
Every case is different; some problems can take up to 3 years to treat while others can be finished in just a few months.
