HEADGEAR
It is essential that your headgear is worn correctly for it to be safe and effective. Although you may not be too enthusiastic about wearing the headgear, please remember that it is needed to ensure a good result. Treatment time will be reduced if it is worn as directed.
You will have been shown how to assemble the headgear, but here is a reminder :
- The metal wiry part is called the bow and has an inner part which fits inside the mouth, and an outer part which looks like long whiskers. The inner part fits into the tubes in the removable brace, or in the tubes stuck on to your upper back teeth. The bends on the inner part of the bow face upwards.
- The thin white strap which is full of holes goes on next. This fits behind the neck, with the end holes attached to the outer part of the bow.
- The main part fits on last. This has some springs inside the plastic disc on the side. The whole thing rests over the back of your head, with the plastic straps attached to the outer part of the bow. The holes in the straps are numbered, and the correct one to use will be marked.
Let the rest of the family see you wearing it. After a few strange looks and the usual insults from brothers or sisters, they will soon go back to completely ignoring you !
Now the hardest part : getting used to it. For the first few nights it will make your teeth ache a bit, and possibly give you a headache as well. Take a headache tablet if necessary, but don’t give up ! These feelings will soon go, and a few days later you will hardly notice that it is on. If you stop for a few nights, it will ache all over again when you re-start. Try to wear the headgear for about 100 hours a week unless otherwise instructed. There’s no point in cheating; this will simply slow down treatment.
Don’t do anything silly while it is being worn, like trying acrobatics on the furniture or having pillow fights with your friends. The headgear bow has some sharp ends which can cause all sorts of problems if it comes adrift.
Lastly you must inform us if there is something wrong. If it comes apart in the night, or it hurts you in some way then phone the Practice immediately on 01992 560 456
